Sustainable Business Practices

At Staycold we are now at the end of year two in our ESG sustainability reporting cycle journey. Even though responsible manufacturing and sustainable business practices have always been central to our company since our inception in 1979, we have started measuring, reporting and improving on metrics to reduce our carbon footprint for climate change.

Looking back over the years, our ESG path significantly increased when we were acknowledged in 2023 by Kudosone as having met the criteria for ESG awareness. Our Kudos ESG Accreditation certificate is proudly displayed here in our showroom.

Before that, in 2022, we were also acknowledged and included in the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) publication: The Pathway to Net-Zero Cooling Product List. Our HD1140-HC model was featured on this list. This as the unit uses a Hydrocarbon refrigerant (R290) which is a net-zero compatible alternative to HFC-based systems. All our coolers are now available in this option.

Materiality Assessment

At Staycold we are now at the end of year two in our ESG sustainability reporting cycle journey. Even though responsible manufacturing and sustainable business practices have always been central to our company since our inception in 1979, we have started measuring, reporting and improving on metrics to reduce our carbon footprint for climate change.

Jumping to 2023, an ESG materiality assessment was needed and we developed key themes and topics for future reporting. We then started collecting the data to determine a baseline position we now have with targets set for future assessment and reporting. This in line with ESG Reporting required on a global scale to help with the drive to net zero emissions by 2050.

ESG Reporting

ESG reporting is essential for our manufacturing facility to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and strong governance. By aligning with global frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and adopting transparent practices, we can assess and manage our environmental impact, social contributions, and governance standards more effectively.

Here is a breakdown of where we are at currently under the ESG headings Environment as the environmental themes are paramount due to the significant environmental impact of refrigeration products. This looks at Staycold’s emissions or more specifically our GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions. Our social impact and governance are of course being simultaneously addressed.

Environment

  • We only use Hydrocarbon gas in our coolers to assist with carbon emissions and we are busy determining a strategy for the freezers.
  • Our 250,000W solar power plant installed in August 2022 has enabled a significant substantial reduction in our electricity purchase from Eskom that we track on our monthly bills.
  • Our factory equipment carefully controlled through the use of timers and relays, has ensured that consumption is restricted wherever possible.
  • Our water extraction is being carefully measured and recycled where possible and our waste management system is being perfected as we learn and measure.

Summary

In 2025 we will be actively measuring and improving our scope 1-3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Sope 1 ie amount of carbon we release directly, scope 2 is the amount of carbon we release indirectly and scope 3 is the amount of carbon we release across the value chain upstream and downstream. This to address the carbon targets and carbon tax, that will be law, as South Africa follows the European lead.

We are all citizens of this fragile world and need to take a seat at the table and help to make these changes. We can be part of reshaping the world for the grand reset that is needed and connect our profits to prosperity so we are and have taken ESG seriously and look forward to progress in 2025.
